I gotta admit when these guys first started playing I didn't pay that much attention to them. I was kinda going through a music snob phase and felt I'd heard that style of music being done to much. And besides seeing the offshoot bands that came from the Gravity records band Heroin, I'd felt that much of the newer bands coming out of SD were just sounding a lot like what was already happening. It wasn't until I saw The Locust open up for Rocket From The Crypt at the Roxy that I became a straight up fan of JP and his bandmates. The RFTC audience at that show didn't really get them and were heckling in between every song. And as much as they threw and spit words at The Locust. JP spit words back just as smart and played twice as hard, loud and fast. I instantly became a fan and when I started paying attention to what they were doing musically beyond what the stage antics were, I was impressed, way impressed. I've seen them evolve out of a hardcore band and into some new style of hardcore that goes beyond the speed and weird time signatures of most bands. However you want to classify them, I just think of them as in the traditional sense of what it is to be punk rock. Be different, unique and be damn good at it! This pic was shot in 2000 at Gaucho's which is a warehouse that occasionally puts on a show now and then still. These guys still tour once in a while, but aren't playing locally that much. All the members are still playing music and seem to still achieve a level of progression within each new band. I have to say after the 90's it seemed pretty difficult to invent a new sound that was a progression of punk or rock n roll. Like their music or not, The Locust invented their own sound which is quite an achievement in this day and age.
