8x10 RC Silver Gelatin Print, all prints are printed by me in the darkroom using Omega enlarger and high quality RC papers. In 2004 Modest Mouse curated All Tomorrow's Parties in Long Beach Calif. Probably one of my favorite festivals to date. Probably because one the location was Long Beach, not very far from where I was, by the water which meant weather wasn't unbearably hot, and the stages consisted of an outdoor stage and one indoor stage that was actually inside the Queen Mary. The indoor stage was so cool because it went down three levels of the rear interior of the boat and at the bottom stage level there was an entrance into a rusty hull of the boat that seemed to be about 3-4 stories high. This venue was not the commercial success the promoters had hoped therefore no more Long Beach ATP's. I still think it was definitely one of the best yearly music festivals out there to this day. Just because different bands and different people like Simpsons creator Matt Groening curated the show each year. I think its great when the music to a festival is hand picked by one of the headlining talent's. Its kinda like getting a live version of a mix tape, except you get to hear a 30min set of songs instead of just one song. One of the headliners that year was the Flaming Lips. Having seen them a few times, I was pretty excited to shoot pics. Wayne Coyne really knows how to entertain on a large stage and I knew there would be some great moments. I've seen some of my favorite bands on larger stages and I gotta say its kind of an art form to play well on them. Larger stage usually means larger scale production. For bands that aren't so used to this they can come across as kinda boring or just not translating that well. And it doesn't really have to mean you have to have pyrotechnics or anything. You just gotta utilize that giant stage the best you can. I actually got a few shots of The Flaming Lips that capture this and this is one of them. I just really like that the text in the back saying YES! And you have Wayne chucking confetti in the air. Pretty much describes how I feel when I hear any song off of Yoshimi or Soft Bulletin!
