Sometime around '91 or '92 a friend of mine that I was doing bands with at the time played me a 7" by the San Diego band Heroin. The cover of the 7" was just cut up brown paper bag that was screen printed over. I just loved the riff with Matt A singing "I can't remember" on the song With No Name. It was just such a departure and different from what was happening with Orange County's hardcore scene. And like a lot of the bands during this time the band was short lived, but branched off into 3 even more interesting bands. Drummer Aaron Montaigne became the singer for Antioch Arrow, Ron Johnson formed Second Story Window and Scott Bartoloni went on with his guitar to help form Clikatat Ikatowi. Here is Clikatat playing Jabberjaw in '95 opening for Unwound. I remember wanting to stand closest to Mario the drummer and get a good shot of him on drums. I had seen 411 a few years earlier and remember how good he was then. By the time Clikatat hit the scene, Mario had become a monster on drums. I was used to always hearing fast paced but pretty straight forward drumming on most hardcore albums, but Mario was digging into some tribal tom and snare bouncing type of beats. Still thrashy enough to be hardcore but creative and neatly textured. Throw in some guitar work by Scott that ranged from high piercing notes, chords that didn't seem to fit but did, bass lines that sounded like being under the influence of early Peter Hook, and Matt Goldsby having the sound of youth and untrained vocals to give it such a nice ring. This was a pretty exciting time watching all these bands come up and invent their sounds. I'm pretty stoked to this day that if you do a Google search on the band one of my pics comes up from this same show.
